Surprised there was nothing mentioned about the retro reflective sights in the Dunkirk scene. It was one of the best portrayed ones I have ever seen - much better than even most modern depictions, where it just looks like an LED screen. There was a reason they did it that way, and why it seems to fade as the camera moves but seems to actually stay still. It is super interesting, and one of the little details that is often overlooked.

It certainly is cringeworthy to watch a lot of military movies. The cinematographers and directors do have to bunch everyone up in the screen and have the actors act so that the moviegoer can see the action. In the end I have to tell myself that it is a movie. I do especially like it when the movie makers get a lot of small details right.

Early on in the war (1939-1940) the RAF had been taught “Fighting Area Attacks” which meant that you flew in tight formations, attacked IN FORMATION (one pilot was weaving behind and acting as “lookout”) and there was big trouble if you didn’t ......in 1935 -38 the idea that fighters would be escorting the bombers was laughable because no one in government considered it likely that France......and the rest of the continent......would be in enemy hands with fighters only having a short range. The German Air Force flew “finger four formation ” and flexible, so THEY could see trouble coming. The RAF had to re-learn lessons originally learnt in WW 1, and also copy the German “finger four” method. Thank God for Hugh Dowding and Keith Park; If the Ideas of Leigh-Mallory and Bader had been followed we would have lost. [ If all this is incomprehensible to you, read “The Narrow Margin” by Wood and Dempster. Remember also that the fact that we had broken the German codes was something only Dowding knew, and wasn’t revealed until the 1960’s.]

19:00 Not a "perfect shot" at all. That burst would have missed by a long way. The enemy is crossing at more than 45 degrees angle off but the Spitfire pilot doesnt fire until he's at the 5 degree point on the reticule (those funny lines and circles on the reticule actually mean something, and yes, "reticule" is the proper way to write it). I am impressed, though, that he only has one outer gun firing tracer, which is correct RAF practice for 1940.

Iron Eagle... ridiculous film but amazing flying sequences, especially the bit with the Cessna. Interesting comment about the USAF given it wasn't their aircraft in any of the F16 sequences - they were Israeli Air Force aircraft (and colour scheme) with USAF markings slapped on. The MiG's in the film are actually Kfirs (Dassault Mirage 5's built under licence in Israel), also of the IAF. Another aspect of that film, and really surprised Whiz didn't blast them for this one, was the term "okay for takeoff". The use of the word "okay" was prohibited in aviation terminology in 1977 following the collision of 2 747's on the runway at Tenerife in which confusion created by the use of that particular word played a significant factor.

As for the close formation in Dunkirk , This is very accurate. The British/Allied fighter pilots dispensed with flying in tight formation in combat areas during the early days of battle of Britain which started 2 months after Dunkirk. Tight formation flying cost a lot of aircraft and so new wider formations consisting leads and wing men were invented that broke apart during battle. .

the RAF insisted on tight formation flight in WW2 so Dunkirk was spot on in this regard. Then with time and experience this changed

Why tf can the marines be snobby abt calling them soldiers? Don’t they just get 3 more weeks of boot camp? I would’ve liked to join the marines but I opted to try for the army instead (medical reasons I didn’t) but that’s like someone in the navy saying “don’t say we eat crayons, marines eat crayons” 🖍

Japanese Kamikaze were not locked into their aircraft....It was a high honor to die in combat for your Emperor.... They also had parachutes ... if the aircraft failed they could bail out and try again.... Kamikaze could return to base (if possible) if they couldn't find a target... obviously someone continually returning might attract attention!!

The Brits hadn’t been very active in rumble before the Battle of France, which is part of the reason they still went with the already obsolete Vic formation. British (and e.g. Soviets) to my understanding subscribed to the “French school” of fighter tactics, which emphasized aerobatic maneuvering as opposed to aggressive sweeps and the consequent more flexible finger four formation already employed by many other European air forces of the time.

in the film Dunkirk, the last pilot gets shot and then he glides with dead engine for god knows how long until he safely lands on the beach to then be captured. I'm not flight expert by any means but I don't think they could have glided Spitfire for that long and then land safely like that with no engine running. Just my thought.
